December 14th, 2012 I woke up for school, I was eleven and in the fifth grade. Christmas break was just around the corner so I woke up with excitement, school was full of Christmas parties and candy. It was such a fun day! And another day closer to school being out for a few weeks!
I get home from school and my dad picks me up. And then I hear it, twenty seven children and adults were shot and killed, that morning. In a school just like mine. Sandy Hook hit the nation hard. Innocent six and seven year olds went to school that morning and didn't come home. Innocent hard working adults woke for work that day, and didn't come home that day. "Who could ever have the awful heart to do such a thing" I thought to myself.
Valentines day, 2018. I was homeschooled that day, I go through the whole morning then I get on twitter. "Seventeen people dead from a school shooting in Florida" it was all over my feed. Seventeen kids and adults woke up on valentines day and didn't come home. Seventeen. Even after five years I can't figure it out, why is this still happening?
What's my point to this post? Well- first this is a tribute to these two schools and the other schools that have had major violence like this. Every parent, student, classmate, teacher, are so strong. They lived through something awful. And every teacher and student that passed, well they are just absolute angels.
My second point? Be kind. You never know who is going through a rough time. No one knew that those two men were going to do what they did, you never know what someone in your life could ever do. Be kind to everyone you meet, even your mean teacher that gave you a C, when you totally deserved a B. Be kind to the boy or girl that clearly isn't a fan of you. It is so simple- yet so powerful. Everyone deserves kindness, including you.
Thank you for reading everyone. Have an amazing week.
